Yes. A well-maintained, certified school water fountain is safe to drink from. The two things that matter most are how the fountain is made and how it’s looked after.
Certification: choose a fountain with lead-free WaterMark certification, which shows it meets Australian plumbing and drinking water standards. Urban’s drinking fountains are lead-free WaterMark certified, so the components that touch the drinking water won’t leach lead into students’ drinking water.
Filtration as standard: every Urban fountain comes with filtration as standard. The filters reduce sediment, chlorine taste and other impurities, so students get clean, fresh-tasting drinking water.
Maintenance: how the unit is maintained makes a big difference to how safe the water is. We recommend changing the filter cartridge every 6 to 12 months, depending on how much the fountain is used. Regular cleaning of bubbler spouts and bottle fillers also helps keep the water hygienic.
Not all our fountains are AS1428 compliant. However, a selection of our products can be designed to be accessible to users with disabilities. We recognize that the AS1428 standard may not cater to all disabilities, so we have designed our fountains to accommodate a range of needs.
For most schools drinking water, the best choice is a stainless steel combination drinking fountain with both a bubbler and a water bottle filling station. Whether it’s wall mounted or floor mounted makes a big difference to height, so match the water fountains mounting to the age of your students.
Primary schools: wall-mounted water fountains can be installed lower, at a comfortable height for younger children. The unit: the type of drinking water station has the biggest influence on price. A simple wall-mounted bubbler costs less than a floor-mounted combination unit with a bottle filling station, chilling and filtration. Extra taps, accessible designs and anti-vandal features also affect the cost.
Installation: plumbing and electrical work is a separate cost. Where you put the station makes a big difference. A spot close to existing water and power is simpler and cheaper to install. A location that needs new pipework, trenching or electrical runs will add to the cost.
